New Puppy Checklist: A Calm First Week

Prepare your home and routine for a puppy with simple, practical first-week guidance.

Set up a welcoming space

Prepare a quiet resting area, washable bedding, fresh water and a space that can be supervised easily. Puppies explore with their mouths, so move loose cords, cleaners, small objects and unsafe plants out of reach.

Keep a predictable routine

Set reasonable times for meals, sleep, play and toilet breaks. Very young puppies need more frequent opportunities to rest and go outside. Watch what works for your individual puppy instead of expecting an adult-dog schedule immediately.

Use reward-based training

Reward calm behaviour and short moments of success. Practice name recognition and coming when called in a quiet space before adding distractions. Avoid punishment that may cause fear or damage trust.

Plan veterinary care

Schedule an initial veterinarian appointment to discuss vaccinations, parasite prevention, microchipping, nutrition and breed-specific needs. The veterinarian can advise on when it is safe to visit different environments.

Prepare a care file

Keep adoption papers, vaccination records, emergency contact numbers and notes in one place. PawNara pet profiles can help you record everyday details, but they are not a substitute for your veterinarian’s medical chart.

Stay realistic

Accidents, interrupted sleep and slow progress are normal parts of adjusting to a new home. Be patient, maintain supervision and seek professional advice if you are worried about behaviour or health.
